The Lead Engineer is a senior staff position within ATO (Advanced Technology) of the company, capable of undertaking a lead role in the execution of engineering programs. Provide design solutions from conceptual through prototype/production models, verification & approval of program activities via recognised testing & validation methods.
• Supervise the interpretation of customer specifications for major projects to produce design specifications.
• Participate in program reviews to identify commercial and technical risks that could impact NPI process.
• Develop conceptual design requirements for customer and undertake concept design reviews where appropriate.
• Participate with the customer in undertaking these reviews and gain acceptance for Design Specification/Basis.
• Develop an overall project verification plan. Where appropriate include verification requirements from third parties and the customer.
• Allocate verification requirements to those within the team.
• Identify and ensure equipment is designed in accordance with the current Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.
• Identify improvements in existing products, procedures and processes and develop cost effective solutions to satisfy specifications.
• Communicate design specifications for interpretation by other engineers and designers, develop resource plan for project.
• Undertake design reviews including materials reviews and environmental reviews.
• Review with supply management the material requirements for a design / project. Ensure these are well defined.
• Prepare preliminary materials lists based upon the above, ensure released into the Product Information Management System (PIMS).
• Ensure the appropriate approvals for the Bill of Materials (BOM) in PIMS.
• Prepare with the planning engineer an execution plan for the scope of work for the engineering deliverables. Monitor and expedite progress of allocated team members.
• Supervise and where appropriate undertake design verification, which may include but not limited to: risk analysis, failure analysis, Fault Tree Analysis, Design Reviews, Design Calculations to establish a full Design Verification Package (DVP) to satisfy the verification plan. Ensure DVP has third party or independent review.
• Responsible for the preparation of Factory Acceptance (FAT) procedures, Prototype Test Procedures and document results (PVT).
• Check and Approve drawings and calculations undertaken by others in support of design.
• Ensure all engineering activities and documents are correctly archived in PIMS.
• Maintains a clean and safe working environment.
• Liase with manufacturing to ensure designs are suitable and allow for efficient manufacture. Provide manufacturing support as required.
• Develop concise documentation package for handover to client with the responsibility for ensuring DPM close out of engineering items.
• Provide Field/Lab support as required.
• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or extensive experience in lieu.
• Experience in heavy mechanical engineering or in a relevant technical discipline e.g. analysis.
• Knowledgeable of Health, Safety and Environmental regulatory requirements for this industry.
• Has established drawing interpretation skills.
• Knowledge of materials, including welding and heat treatment of metals and elastomers.
• Be familiar with relevant industry standards and codes for area of work.
• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with cross-functional experience preferred
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Technological proficiency, including relevant engineering tools
• Additional experience designing and implementing new products using the NPI process is preferred
• An understanding of Six Sigma tools to make data-based recommendations and decisions
• Ability to successfully work in a team environment
